Hayfever Woes September 13, 2009

My friend Cat arrived to visit from the UK. Hubby went to pick her up from the airport in the morning. Poor Cat was so knackered after the long flight she went straight to bed. We had a traditional Aussie barbie for lunch at home (i.e. some snags and a rather massive steak) and then chilled in the early afternoon. Hubby took Evie into the pool for the first time this year (they went into our pool for the first time, rather than her first time in a pool ever) but she didn’t like it. Later we headed off to Carss Park for a mooch about, stretch legs and a nice coffee. Since I woke up this morning I’ve been non-stop sneezing and runny nosed. The pollen must be really high today as I went through 2 boxes of tissues and my eyes were so itchy. When we got back from Carss Park it was so bad I had to cancel playing piano at church as I wouldn’t have been able to see (what with all the eye rubbing and sneezing). I think it’s hitting me particularly badly as this is my first Spring in Oz and hubby reckons I’ve not built up any resistance at all to the Aussie pollen.
Evie made a new friend at the Carss Park playground. She climbed up the slide and met a little boy at the top of the slide who she went straight up to a gave a big cuddle. He seemed equally enamoured by her and they went down the slide together and held hands walking round to the steps again. It was so cute. He was only about 2.5 years old. Blond haired little dude who was very grubby (think he must have been rolling about on the playground floor chippings). Evie was shrieking with delight. Meanwhile her Daddy was not looking impressed at Evie’s antics with said boy and he was sulking big time. Poor Evie – Daddy says now no more boyfriends till she’s 25 (she’s had 3 already and she’s only 13 months old).
10 Things About My Blood Test Results September 10, 2009

This morning I got my blood test results from last week. Haven’t done a 10 things Thursday for a while so thought this week I’ll make 10 comments about them.
1. I had a whole barrage of tests done – LFT, C, UCr, E pGlu, HDL, TSH, FBC, ESR, ANA, IgA, IgG, IgM, and C3/C4 (according to the print out)
2. Total Cholesterol level is flagged (surprisingly it’s actually a bit low!!)
3. IgG too high (due to the discoid lupus)
4. IgA too high (due to the discoid lupus)
5. Mild eosinophilia (due to my allergies)
6. LDH too high (only marginally and can’t remember the explanation the doctor gave, but nothing to worry about)
7. Apparently the rest of me is “normal” – who would have thought that adjective would ever be used to describe little ole me?
8. The Aussie doctors give you the full lab print out from your blood results (they never did that at my UK GP I always had to remember what they said or write it down myself)
9. So now I also have a referral letter so I can go to the hospital to get put on the waiting list for Dermatology clinic (although here they call it Skin Clinic)
10. I hate blood tests
Not Quite So Ouch September 3, 2009

I’ve had soooo many blood tests over the years and they always hurt as I have stupidly hiding veins and thick skin (although my sis who is a doctor always says they’re easy to find). Went for my first blood test in Oz. The doctor did it and she looked a bit confused when she started prodding my arms. Then I told her that my record was 5 holes in my arms for one blood test and she looked very nervous after that. Thankfully she managed to get one first time and actually it didn’t hurt too bad (I think the pain usually comes about when they miss the vein and then wiggle the needle about or once when they started trying to drain my blood out by pushing downwards on the vein). Am sure everything will be fine – as it always is and will get the results next week.
Jabs again! August 3, 2009

Poor Evie had to have yet another jab this morning (after last week’s round). She went over to the Bangor practice to have her Hep B jab on catch up because we’ve moved from the UK and they don’t give Hep B there. She always sees Lisa the nurse. Evie absolutely adores Lisa even though she’s always there to have an injection. After last week’s 10 mins of crying and snivelling after her injections today she didn’t even shed one tear. She made some angry noises for a minute and that was it – she went back to grinning at Lisa. She also confirmed that this was Evie’s last catch up jab (just 3 Hep B shots not 4 like the GP in Brighton-le-Sands insisted).

Evie went for her 12 month immunisations. She had 3 jabs in total. Not impressed with the new GP. A friend from church recommended them but I found him a little too old-school. First he has no digital records – no computer at all. His desk is covered in files and apparatus. He prepares the 3 needles on his desk (no tray or anything) and after giving her the first two he lost the last one amongst all the paperwork and folders on his desk (yikes and the needles was exposed it’s amazing he didn’t prick himself). So poor Evie got 2 jabs and screamed, I managed to settle her and then she got the 3rd jab 5 mins later and screamed again. Then she was measured with a tape measure. Just held up against her while she was standing on my lap. Then they weighed her and I asked whether I should take her clothes off (she was wearing massive trainers) and he said no. She was 8.5kg and the doctor said she’s too light for her age and that she should be at least 9.3kg as he said it had to be 3x the birth weight. Later looking at her growth charts at her current weight she’s following the same growth curve she always had – he didn’t even bother looking. Also he forgot to fill in any of her blue book! Don’t think I’ll be going back to him again!
House Shopping & Unwell Baby February 9, 2009

We’ve now been to 3 Saturday’s worth of open houses looking for our next home. We went for a second viewing at a place we really liked on Saturday and today I sent off some questions to the estate agent. 2 hours later the agent got back to us, the house had just sold. They agreed a price and managed to exchange contracts at the same time. Wow they worked quickly. Well, I guess it was just not meant to be. I’m not too worried though as there are houses which fit our criteria coming onto the market everyday.
Evie has been having a funny turn this last weekend. Friday morning she woke up and she was burning up. Took her temperature and it was 37.9. Over the next 24 hours it got higher and higher till at 5am Saturday she was over 39 deg C. 2 hours later she woke up and it was back down to 37.3. Other than the extreme temperature she was perfectly normal, happy and smiling away (even when I gave her a cold bath). She had quite a few doses of baby paracetamol too to help control it. By Saturday evening she was getting warmer again. Sunday morning she was back down to normal temperatures and stayed that way. It was quite scary as it’s the first time she’s been ill and I was panicking away. But cos of the lack of any other symptoms we felt she was ok. Sunday she was off her food a little (well, she was still eating most of it, but not her usual ravenous ways). This morning she was fine but she got a little heat rash on her neck. Over the next 1/2 hr she suddenly seemed to develop plenty of tiny red spots on her chest, back and some on her face. Bathtime made it worse. Then she had a nap and the spots went down. Thinking it was just heat rash we just let her sleep it off. Searching on the internet it would appear she probably has got Roseola Infantum – sudden fever for 2-3 days followed by rash once the fever subsides. My parents made me worry a bit as they thought she had developed measles, but she had no other symptoms. We’ll see tomorrow morning if she is any worse then I will take her to the doctors.
Teething Screaming January 4, 2009

What happened to my lovely, placid, calm, contented little baby girl. This last week she’s been getting a bit grumpy in the afternoons/evenings. We figured it was probably her adjusting to the new country and time zone. Tonight was a different matter. She didn’t have her normal naps during the day, other than for 5 mins at a time and got grumpier and grumpier. Finally got her down to sleep by feeding her to sleep around 7pm. 9.30pm she wakes up screaming. Literally screaming the loudest I have ever heard her and sustained too. I ran into her room to check she was OK and it would appear she was still asleep. I think she must have been having a nightmare or something. Walked her around the house a bit and she started to calm down. Then gave her to my mum to cuddle and she started screaming again, same happened when hubby picked her up. It’s like tonight she only wants her Mummy. Her face was bright red but she had no temperature. Tried the elephant teething thing that you put in the fridge but she just threw it back at us whilst increasing the pitch of the screaming. Eventually we ended up putting Calgel on her gums and a bit of baby Calpol as her head was red hot (but her body seemed ok temperature). Another feeding to sleep and she’s finally down again now. Even through the feeding she was whinging away mid suck. I feel so sorry for her that she’s grumpy and in pain and I can’t really do much for her.
Yay – Valuation Came Through October 3, 2008

Hurray, after the valuation last week we’ve been sweating a bit all week. Mostly because I feared that because of all the doom and gloom and pessimistic mortgage company valuations that ours would come out lower than expected. Thankfully though it’s come through at the same price that we had offered. So hopefully now we’ll be signing and exchanging contracts in the next couple of weeks.
Twanged my damn neck again this morning. Got up and fed Evie and then just putting my jumper on my neck suddenly twinged and got stuck at a funny angle. Most uncomfortable and got worse during the day. Hubby came home to find Evie crying in her cot. I put her down about 10 mins before he got home and then I couldn’t lift her out of the cot again cos my neck hurt so badly.
Urggh a Cold September 16, 2008

I’ve got a cold – boo! This is the first proper cold I’ve had since (I think) January. Whilst I was pregnant I had a great immune system and even all my allergies didn’t seem to affect me. Now hubby has gone back to school and within 2 weeks I have the first of the colds. It’ll be like this on and off now till Spring! I hate this time of year because my nose is constantly running and sore and I can just feel a crack starting to form (my nose is trying to detach itself from me). I just hope poor little Evie doesn’t get it as she’ll be miserable. She’s only 7 weeks old. But part of me thinks that it would probably be good for her to be exposed to normal everyday germs as her immune system needs to learn how to cope with them.
Stress August 14, 2008

Apparently I am suffering from a mixture of stress and lack of sleep. Unsurprising really with a 3 week old baby, trying to sell the house and preparing to emigrate to Australia! Over this week I have been suffering with bad headaches. They’re stabbing pangs of pain initially to both my temples, but this last couple of days I have had similar pains at the back left of my head. Also my whole lower jaw’s teeth are sore as I suspect I may have been grinding my teeth in my sleep, even my ear started to hurt at one point. Went to the GP today and they checked my blood pressure, weight and looked in my eyes. All are normal so nothing untoward to worry about. GP said it was probably mostly the lack of sleep and that I should try to take things easy – hmm, easy thing to say but hard when u have a baby making demands on you all the time. I’m breastfeeding too so I have to get up to feed her.
Good news though – weight wise I am now 7kg lighter than before I even got pregnant. Yay I have succesfully converted my flab to baby and milk!!!!
Summary of the day: Tidied and relaxed a little in the morning, My parents came to visit for the week (yay), Went to the GP, Made a chinese noodle soup for dinner
