Intersection Tavern Ramsgate November 17, 2009

Decided to go out to the Intersection Tavern in Ramsgate tonight for dinner with all the UK visitors. We’ve been there before but decided after all the eating out at Chinese restaurants it was time for a change (esp for my English hubby who isn’t enamoured with rice for every meal). We like the place as it feels a lot like an English pub/bar (think Wetherspoons/Llyods Bar type thing). We’ve not really found anything that feels like a traditional pub here (well, why would we expect to) and I guess the closest thing is a “hotel” (I wonder if they actually do have rooms these days or if they are just bars with gambling sections). Anyway we ordered the BBQ Pork Ribs, Lamb Shanks, Ribeye Steak and the Steak n Guinness Shephard’s Pie.
BBQ Pork Ribs – These were extremely plentiful (think of the Brontosaurus ribs in the title sequence of The Flintstones). They had a slightly spicy taste too. They were quite soft, not jawbreaking and very finger-licking. Only thing that would have been better if they had been a bit warmer (they were a little tepid by the time they brought the dishes out to the table). Came with some yummy wedges and salad.
Lamb Shanks – 2 whole lamb shanks. My poor Mum is only tiny and she ordered this. To be fair to her, she did manage to eat most of the meat (mostly by ensuring she piled various bits of it on everyone else’s plates to “try”). The meat was very soft and fell off the bone. I think this dish would have been better on a cold Winter evening as it was quite stodgy with all the mash and gravy.
Ribeye Steak – wow this was meant to be 300g but it looked like it was 300g excluding the massive bone sticking out over the edges of the plate!!! It was ordered rare and came just medium rare (not bleeding or “mooing” as hubby would say). Looked good though.
Beef and Guinness Shephard’s Pie – no idea why it would be called a Shephard’s pie (not even Shepherd’s). Traditionally Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb (i.e. sheep) and this was blatantly a Cottage Pie (made with minced beef) – though perhaps this recipe is named after someone called “Shephard”??? Hubby’s verdict was that it needed more Guinness and more crispiness of the potato topping.
Overally we had a great time. The food was a little slow, but then there were 8 of us so expected it to be a while (I suspect it was the Lamb Shanks that took the longest as they were the hottest when served). The meals were around $20 each, but currently (till end of Nov 2009) they are doing 2 for 1 on mains at www.hotdocket.com.au. You need to print out a new coupon for every 2 meals (i.e. we needed 4 coupons with different serial numbers on) – no worry though as you just press refresh on the website and print out again.

Another Scorcher in Bundeena October 21, 2009

After 3 weeks with my MIL visiting and it being unseasonably cold, damp and all round unpleasant weather it’s been wonderful sunshine and blue skies since she left on Thursday. Today it was another lovely day and we had our first over-30 deg day for some time. As it was my brother’s day off we spent the day with him at his pad in Bundeena (which is a lovely little remote township in the Royal National Park in Sydney). Headed off to the beach with little Evie and remembered (first time since Jan) to bring her bucket and spade set. We had ice creams and went down to Horden’s Beach first and enjoyed the lovely clean sand and Evie paddled around a bit in the creek. Yet again she found another boyfriend, this time, a Thomas the Tank Engine toddler to play with. Headed over the ferry pier, over the rocks and onto Gunyah beach. Gunyah is a lovely small beach and it’s always very quiet as noone (apart from those who live nearby) know it’s there. The house was boiling when we got back and even with all the windows open and fans blasting air around the humidity didn’t really drop till around 10pm (just in time for sleeping thankfully).
Gymea Afternoon Trip October 9, 2009

Another pretty soggy day again!!! Poor Mum and Howell have had such rubbish weather all holiday. Not only has it been wet, it’s also been cold too. Brrrrrrrrr. There was a short break in the rain in the afternoon so we decided to get out of the house for hubby’s last day off work. We went down to Gymea. First stop – the Hazelhurst Galleries. Bugger – they’re changing the display tomorrow so the gallery itself was closed. Decided we didn’t really just want to go to the gift shop and cafe so moved on. Went down to the Camelia Gardens. As we got there the weather became glorious. As usual, I totally forgot that it closes at 4, so we whizzed round in less than an hour. Actually the nicest part was the part at the bottom just outside of teh park. There’s a lovely waterfall going down into Gymea Bay with loads of ducks (and really cute fluffly ducklings at this time of year). The weather changed again and pissed it down as we got back to the car. We made a quick stop at Nina’s Chocolates and spent ages deciding what chocolates to get. They were all so beautiful, but expensive ($8.60/100g) so we had to really agonise over which ones to pick.
Poulton Park & Melissa Visit September 19, 2009

As it was a fabulous day (weatherwise) we decided to go out for another little explore with Evie and the doggy in tow. We went to Poulton Park which is near Hurstville Grove. It took us a little while to find the entrance (hubby didn’t bother to find out which road it was on and the GPS had no idea it even existed). There’s a really cool playground there. There’s a younger toddlers play equipment area and an older kiddies (and parents
) set of equipment too. They also have plastic slides rather than metal ones. I’m not sure however which I prefer. The metal ones get way too hot in the sun for little bottoms and the plastic ones seem to generate huge amounts of static (not a nice surprise when you catch your offspring at the end of the slide). Wandered off across the playing field and found a lovely mini bushwalk. It’s being regenerated and it very well laid out and maintained (proper wooden steps and paths). There’s a lovely creek/river running through and lots of little weirs/waterfalls. Mocha got absolutely soaked and muddy jumping in and out of the water.
My friend Melissa from way back (must be about 20 years ago when we first met) was visiting Oz with her family and she came to meet us for the afternoon. We headed up to Mr Chou’s for Yum Cha (it was a bit pants though as it was around 2pm and there wasn’t much variety left on the trolleys) then down to Ramsgate for some chilling at the beach. Evie enjoyed making sandcastles and I enjoyed catching up with Melissa. Was lovely to see her again, but also a bit sad as I know it’ll be a while before we meet again. Ah well, internet’s a wonderful thing for keeping in touch.
Kogarah Rhymetime September 16, 2009

I dragged Evie and myself to Rhymetime at the library in Kogarah. Contrary to the internet – the library is NOT actually located at 2 Belgrave St, but actually on the other side of the road about 50m up the road, set back in a piazza. It was hard to find a space to park the car and I ended up doing 2 rounds of Kogarah centre before I managed to swoop into a previously occupied space. Hence I was already late then wandering around #2 which had numerous entrances with automatic doors but sadly all shut and looked very closed down. Eventually went to a nearby cafe to ask. Finally found the library and was surprised as the place is massive. They have the rhymetime in the atrium at the entrance and there’s loads of space and big comfy seats for the parents. Even the 2 librarians leading the rhymetime had head-mics so that they could be heard over the vast masses. Although there were loads of kids it didn’t feel cramped and was nice to see the kids all so happy and excited. Evie was a bit scared at first but started to relax more (though saying that she never went further than arm’s length from my chair). Enjoyed it and think will def go back (unlike the horrid time I had at South Hurstville rhymetime a few weeks ago where some of the other mummies were ghastly to me).

My friend Cat arrived to visit from the UK. Hubby went to pick her up from the airport in the morning. Poor Cat was so knackered after the long flight she went straight to bed. We had a traditional Aussie barbie for lunch at home (i.e. some snags and a rather massive steak) and then chilled in the early afternoon. Hubby took Evie into the pool for the first time this year (they went into our pool for the first time, rather than her first time in a pool ever) but she didn’t like it. Later we headed off to Carss Park for a mooch about, stretch legs and a nice coffee. Since I woke up this morning I’ve been non-stop sneezing and runny nosed. The pollen must be really high today as I went through 2 boxes of tissues and my eyes were so itchy. When we got back from Carss Park it was so bad I had to cancel playing piano at church as I wouldn’t have been able to see (what with all the eye rubbing and sneezing). I think it’s hitting me particularly badly as this is my first Spring in Oz and hubby reckons I’ve not built up any resistance at all to the Aussie pollen.
Evie made a new friend at the Carss Park playground. She climbed up the slide and met a little boy at the top of the slide who she went straight up to a gave a big cuddle. He seemed equally enamoured by her and they went down the slide together and held hands walking round to the steps again. It was so cute. He was only about 2.5 years old. Blond haired little dude who was very grubby (think he must have been rolling about on the playground floor chippings). Evie was shrieking with delight. Meanwhile her Daddy was not looking impressed at Evie’s antics with said boy and he was sulking big time. Poor Evie – Daddy says now no more boyfriends till she’s 25 (she’s had 3 already and she’s only 13 months old).
Kogarah Street Fair August 29, 2009

We went to the Kogarah Street Fair today. Unsurprisingly, it’s held in Kogarah
We didn’t make it down till mid afternoon so unfortunately missed the bed race – they race in teams to push/pull along old hospital beds for charidee. It was bloody boiling today and we were slightly regretting deciding to walk down to Kogarah which is 2 stops on the train line away and takes us about 20 minutes. Ordinarily 20 mins walk isn’t too bad, but when the sun is glaring in your face it’s very hot! There were loads of stalls set up. Mostly food and drink of different types as well as the local banks and businesses. There was also a stage set up in the Plaza and various bands/dance troups performing which was cool. Mocha enjoyed “swooping” about trying to snaffle up morsels of food dropped probably by some wayward toddler. Evie enjoyed playing peekaboo behind her freebie helium balloon. We enjoyed sitting having a lovely coffee in the shade whilst people watching. I love love love Alexander’s in Kogarah. It’s a cafe/restaurant and we’ve been there 3 times and not been disappointed yet. I had an iced coffee and hubby had a freshly squeezed apple and ginger juice. We finished off with a slice of the tallest lemon meringue pie I’ve ever had (seriously it was about 6″ high).
Little Italy, Allawah August 19, 2009

So it’s the last night of my twenties! Decided to have a quiet dinner with family and chose the local Italian restaurant. It has good reviews on the net and I looooove Italian food. The food was great. Especially the Caesar salad (it had chicken fillets, not just tiny microscopic cubes), a whole bunch of anchovies (hubby’s fav) and the veggies were crisp and fresh. The antipasto plate was good too and Evie enjoyed munching on all the cheese from it. Hubby had a pizza (which was massive and probably would have fed all 4 of us) and I had (surprise, surprise) lasagne (my fav). It’s a bit of a running joke in my family that I am Garfield. It’s my benchmarking stick to try out the lasagne. I quite enjoyed it, but would have preferred it baked and presented in the dish rather than a portion cut from a larger tray. I really like those gnarly bits that get stuck to the edge
The pasta sheets were nice and thick and it had bits of bacon in as well as the bolognaise. I would have liked a little more bechamel though as it was just a very thin speckling on top. I’m no expert in Italian food so no idea if this is the authentic style or not – it was very tasty though. Was a bit meated out after all that. I usually hide veggies in the ones I make (it’s the only way to get hubby to eat them). The ambience was absolutely rubbish tonight though – you could hardly hear yourself think due to all the noise. Unfortunately there was a private party upstairs which consisted of about 20 8 years olds screaming and throwing food off the banister and running up and down the stairs. The poor staff had to mop the steps as some kid threw their drink down the steps (no doubt trying to recreate a waterfall). I felt really sorry for the couple who were sitting at the table next to the stairs as they ended up with someone’s used serviette landing plumb into their main course (yucky). It was very busy, but the food did come fairly quickly.
Oatley Park August 1, 2009

Decided to go on a family excursion to another place near our new home. Looking on the map we found Oatley Park. Drove off there with baby and rather squeaky, excited dog in tow. It’s a beautiful place and lots of things to see. First stop the Steamroller Playground. It had a lot of play equipment as well as an old steamroller to climb on. Walked off down to the Oatley Baths which is a netted off area of beach and sea on Jewfish Bay. Up the steps to the “Castle” which was more of a folly but enjoyed climbing on top of the “ramparts”. Note if you come with young kids, don’t expect to be able to do much walking from the beach with the buggy – we ended up folding up the buggy and carrying Evie whilst dragging it behind us (thankfully it was the lightweight umbrella one). Then followed the long walking track up to Dracula’s Canteen and The House. They are both cave formations. Dracula’s canteen is a massive cave with a huge overhang. The roof looks sort of honeycombed or brain like and the rest is all pitted and gnarly looking. We’re not quite sure why it’s called Dracula’s other than maybe bats might live there. The House is a smaller cave that looks like it has 3 walls of the house. unfortunately it was pretty eroded away on the rocks that make up the floor so we couldn’t walk around to see it properly. The walk was lovely and skirted along the edge of the water through the bushland so was pretty shady and cool. Every so often there was a lookout and the views were spectacular. We found ourselves trying to guess whereabouts we were on the Georges River and whether we were looking at Como or Bonnet Bay, etc
We didn’t meet a single soul on the way round the bushwalk.
The thing I really noticed was it was so peaceful (even with the deranged monkeys/kookaburras) and there were so many families there enjoying the space. Wonderful place and we’ll definitely go there. On the way back we stopped at Oatley and had fish n chips in the Memorial Gardens from the chicken shop-ace.
