Epic Fail (well almost) February 24, 2012

Today my husband is having his Confirmation of Canditure (he’s progressing after his 1st year doing a part time PhD at University of New England).  So proud of him, juggling his day job as well as furthering his brain too.  Anyway, sometimes, with all of his natural brilliance comes some astounding idiocy!!  As usual I am his personal organiser!!  So I booked his flights and accommodation and sorted it all out for him to just turn up on the day.  His flight departed at 7:10 this morning.  At 6:10 my mum comes into our bedroom and we wake up in shock as we’re supposed to have left to go to the airport 20 mins prior!!  eep.  I’m 1/2 awake, just fumble about looking for my car keys, slip some crocs on and get into the car.  Hubby grabs his bag (thankfully packed the night before), grabs his shaver and is somehow changing into his clothes whilst still having his seatbelt on.  Wonder what the other commuters in cars must have thought, me driving with bed hair in my PJs and hubby changing in the passenger seat.  We’re both in shock and wondering how we both missed the alarm.  Hubby is cursing at his phone as he set the alarm on that.  Almost at the airport and he looks sheepishly at me… oh he accidentally set his alarm to go off at 5am on SUNDAY morning – fat lot of use that would be 2 days late!!  Sometimes our life really is like a sitcom!

Postnote:  Hubby made it to the airport 20 mins before boarding, got through security, bought a coffee and walked straight onto the plane!

Tonight we had our first alfresco BBQ dinner in the garden (boy, Sydney’s summer this year has been a total washout). As we sat down to eat and serving onto plates a little voice pipes up “let’s say prayers”! I was rather surprised as we usually have to tell her to wait and be quiet for grace. Our little Evie again surprised us with her abilities. She said she would say grace (first time ever)! She said with no prompting “father, thank you for our yummy dinner… and thank you for our lovely things. amen!”. Oh I was so proud, she a. can make up her own prayers and b. say it so sincerely and mean it. I was so excited for her, and of course my parents are here on hols so they were proud as punch too. They didn’t realise she’d never said grace herself before and asked her where she learnt it. She replied “Jesus gave me a gift”. Wow I was totally taken aback! How does a 3 year old know about gifts of intercession???? Jesus, thank you for our gift of Evie and we rejoice that she is beginning her own relationship with you. Thank you for her gifts and help us to guide her in your plans for her.

Time’s Getting Faster February 14, 2012

Is it just me or does time seem to be going faster lately? As the planets are not spinning out of orbit I guess not, but how is it that my baby is 5 months old already?? My Solly Dolly is not only growing in age but accelerating in size (now 90th centile weight and height), but he’s started eating solids with much gusto, he’s rolling over, and he’s almost crawling!

In conversation with my parents we were discussing their 40th wedding anniversary next year. Was shocked to realise that my eldest brother (from another mother) is going to be 50 next year. I thought that can’t be right as I remember my Dad turning 50 and that seemed really old. Then I scared myself and realized my next milestone is 40 (not for another 7 yrs thankfully)! Yikes time really is accelerating!

Moths & Barnacles Phobia February 8, 2012

There are 2 things that I just can not stand…. not only hate, but my skin crawls or it makes me jump up in fear.

1.  Moths – my hubby used to laugh when I said I hate moths.  I haven’t always felt that way.  For some reason they love to flitter about in my face.  Hubby even agrees with me these days, if a moth is about, then it always seems to be attacking me :(   I hate their flittery wings, like bits of old parchmenty skin, I don’t like the way they seem to want to fly into my mouth bleurgh.  Creepy!

2. Barnacles – this sounds ridiculous but these things make me actually recoil!  It’s hard to describe, but I just don’t like all those tiny little holes, and when the water is on them, the holes all open up like a billion little aliens… bleurgh I feel vomitty just thinking about them.  For some reason I feel disgust and freaked out at the same time.  Same goes for the tiny little eyes/holes things you get on fresh squid that are forever winking.  It’s got to the point where if there are barnacles on rocks at the beach I will go out of my way to avoid stepping on them or looking at them.  I have no idea why, it’s not like they’re going to jump off the rocks and cheese grater my feet is it?

So there you go, another random insight into my freaky persona ;)

Grr Arggh Rant aka Where’s My Sodding Calendar???? February 7, 2012

Well, last month I ordered a calendar through snapfish.  Actually it was a rather good deal at the time as it was 40% off.  As ever, looking to save money I opted to have my order delivered to my local Kmart ($2.95 rather than $8ish for home delivery).  The estimated delivery date was 23/01, which was a week or so but I figured hey, that’s ok.  Come 23/01 I go into the store and they say it hasn’t arrived yet.  In the last 2 weeks I have been into the store 6 times enquiring about my calendar, and each time they say they are still waiting for it from snapfish!  Finally on Saturday I suspected something to be amiss and contacted snapfish who advise that my calendar was successfully delivered on 18/01!!!  Grr rant grr arrrgh GRRRRR.  So I ring up Kmart (I’m not wasting time going in if I’m not already in passing) and they say as usual that snapfish is the problem, then I said oh it was signed for by Mr X,Y,Z and they say sheepishly, “well we have had a pallet go missing somewhere in store”.  They said they would go look for my calendar AGAIN.  20 mins later they phoned to say it must be on that missing pallet.  I said, so how will I get MY CALENDAR??? They said I can wait till it turns up.  What??  I have already waited, the lost pallet has been missing 3 weeks already and my calendar has  6 wasted weeks on it.  I said that’s not good enough, I paid for a calendar so I want a calendar (well, it wasn’t phrased quite as politely as that… but you can guess).  A bit of “can-whoop-a**ing” later and I can come in and print out a new calendar on free credit in store with 1hr print.  So thankfully this afternoon I finally have my lovely calendar in pride of place on my wall, already scrawled with ink with all the events coming up (I’ve felt really lost without one this year).

My Wonderful Girl is Growing Up February 6, 2012

My ball of energy, 3.5yr old daughter, Evie is growing up so fast. She starts preschool on Thursday. She’s ever so excited about all the fun stuff she’ll be doing. I have told her she must do 4 things….
1. Be polite and courteous to others (teachers and other kids)
2. Listen to the teacher
3. Try your best
4. Have FUN!!!

I’m positive that she will have a ball! She will be into everything, and as evidenced at the induction morning, she’ll be trying to answer all teacher’s questions. I know every parent believes their child to be advanced, but I really do think she is academically ahead (and I’m no Tiger Mum, believe me… when other mums say their kid only watches 1/2 hr of TV a day, I think to myself, mine has watched that and we haven’t even had breakfast yet). She’s got a massive vocabulary and is verbose about everything (trying to get a word in edgeways is hard), she knows her alphabet (capitals and small letters), she knows numbers up to 20 (and a few sporadic ones over that), she can spell and write her own name, she knows colours, she can do sums with numbers up to 5, and she can read a few words. Naturally I am proud of her achievements, and amazed that she has absorbed everything she sees and does like a sponge. It almost seems unbounding her learning. As a new chapter of her life begins I wonder what amazing things she will surprise us with next ;)

Time to get off my fat ahem! February 5, 2012

Well, a couple of years ago I did couch to 5k program and a 5k race with the aims of getting fit and fabulous to have our second child (at the time I’d had an ectopic pregnancy and had to hold off TTC as I’d had methotrexate and a laparoscopy to remove it + all the mental emotion stuff that goes with it). Well now my bub is a rather hefty 4.5 month old and I’m finally motivated to get fitter not fatter! It’s really hard as I snacked so much in pregnancy and breastfeeding makes me ravenous! Anyhow, I finally got off my fat a**e and run again. I warmed up and stretched 5 mins, run 10, walked 5 and ran 10 again. It wasn’t too bad, def need to improve fitness over the next few weeks. No shin splints, cramps etc hurrah! Went rather bright shade of beetroot – guess it’s a good thing, if I’m generating heat, I’m burning fat! Was so hot when I got home I jumped straight into the pool and did 10mini laps (it’s a small pool) and stretched muscles. Boy did my legs feel like lead when I got out. Will report back how creaky I am tomorrow morning ;)

Gosh I’ve been forgetting to update my blog for so long! Here’s the latest list of books from the library. I do suspect that we may have borrowed one of then before as it seems so familiar (esp the hippo eatin cake, but then there are a whole series of those so maybe that’s why).

We’re Off to Look for Aliens. By Colin McNaughton
There’s a Hippopotamus on our Roof Eating Cake. By Hazel Edwards
The Gruffalo’s Child. By Julia Donaldson

It’s official… we have a baby bison for a son!!! Took him to H’ville baby clinic for a weighing to see how he’s doing. He’s now 7.43kg and 67cm long. He’s about 90th centile… seems so strange as Evie was always 10-25th centile and petite.

In other news Evie is delighted to have playgroup start again for the year. She’s becoming quite a drama queen. I found her standing on top of the slide with 4 or 5 kids standing at the bottom watching her singing Twinkle twinkle little star!
