As Mum and Howell have just arrived and are getting over their jetlag, we decided to do something fairly relaxing for the day. We headed off to Cronulla and booked onto the Cruise on the Port Hacking river. It’s $20 each and lasts about 3 hours. It was a fabulour day and the sky was totally blue. Evie had lots of fun running up and down the aisles in the boat and scabbing biscuits off anyone she could find. I almost felt asleep on the boat as it was lovely and warm with the breeze just fluttering through the windows. After we got back to terra firma we strolled up to the seafood place up the road for some lovely fish n chips.

Hubby’s mum has come out to visit us for the next couple weeks. It’s weird to think that we haven’t seen her since we left before Christmas. It was quite wrenching when we left (especially for hubby) and Mum was upset to have Evie go. Evie was her usual charming self and took straight to “Nana” cuddling her at the airport. Evie especially likes saying Nana lots now ;)

The Day Sydney Turned Orange September 23, 2009

Yesterday evening was so humid then suddenly the wind changed and there was an almighty storm. Proper thunder, sheet lightning and torrential downpour. Finally – it’s been so muggy this last week and the garden was thankfully for it was parched. The winds blew all night and shortly before 6am this morning we woke up and were surprised to see a bright orange glow coming from around the curtain edges. At first I thought wow one of our neighbour’s houses must be on fire or something. Then we opened the curtain and blinds and saw the most amazing thing. The world was totally orange. It was like a mist had descended and it was bright orange! It was just like in the films where there’s been an apocalyptic event and the world has ended. There was just orangey red dust everywhere. Here’s a piccie I took from the back verandah – this is actually how it looked and I swear I haven’t altered the colour settings or anything.

Sadly hubby had to go to work (even though it was blowing a gale and you couldn’t see further than about 20m). Being asthmatic I hid indoors all day today. The eerie orange glow faded around 10am and by lunchtime the sun was out however there was dust everywhere. My lovely black car is now orange!

Poulton Park & Melissa Visit September 19, 2009

As it was a fabulous day (weatherwise) we decided to go out for another little explore with Evie and the doggy in tow. We went to Poulton Park which is near Hurstville Grove. It took us a little while to find the entrance (hubby didn’t bother to find out which road it was on and the GPS had no idea it even existed). There’s a really cool playground there. There’s a younger toddlers play equipment area and an older kiddies (and parents ;) ) set of equipment too. They also have plastic slides rather than metal ones. I’m not sure however which I prefer. The metal ones get way too hot in the sun for little bottoms and the plastic ones seem to generate huge amounts of static (not a nice surprise when you catch your offspring at the end of the slide). Wandered off across the playing field and found a lovely mini bushwalk. It’s being regenerated and it very well laid out and maintained (proper wooden steps and paths). There’s a lovely creek/river running through and lots of little weirs/waterfalls. Mocha got absolutely soaked and muddy jumping in and out of the water.

My friend Melissa from way back (must be about 20 years ago when we first met) was visiting Oz with her family and she came to meet us for the afternoon. We headed up to Mr Chou’s for Yum Cha (it was a bit pants though as it was around 2pm and there wasn’t much variety left on the trolleys) then down to Ramsgate for some chilling at the beach. Evie enjoyed making sandcastles and I enjoyed catching up with Melissa. Was lovely to see her again, but also a bit sad as I know it’ll be a while before we meet again. Ah well, internet’s a wonderful thing for keeping in touch.

Choc Chip & Apricot Cookies September 18, 2009

Made another batch of cookies this afternoon. Last time I managed to make some lovely chewy ones but sadly I totally forgot which website I got the recipe off so had another go today (I think it’s a new recipe as it doesn’t seem the same as last time). Today’s is based on the Big, Fat, Chewy Choc Chip Recipe on allrecipes.com.au. Here’s what I used…

Ingredients:
- 250g of plain flour
- 1/2 tsp of baking powder
- 150g of melted butter (I like to cut the butter quantity down a bit) and as all I had in the fridge was salted butter I didn’t add any more salt to the recipe
- 100g of raw brown sugar (don’t have packed brown sugar in the pantry)
- 50g of icing sugar (I don’t like to use as much sugar as allrecipes did)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp of vanilla essence
- 50g of dark choc chips
- 50g of chopped dried apricots
- Zest of one small orange

Instructions:
- Put flour, sugars and baking powder into mixing bowl
- Add the melted butter, vanilla essence and egg to the mixture and stir well with a fork till all combined
- Add the choc chips, chopped apricots and the zest and stir into mixture
- The mixture should be like squishy dough and not too wet. If you can roll a small amount into a ball it’s right! If it sticks to your fingers too readily then add a little more flour. Now you can do the cookies in 2 ways. Option 1 makes thicker dome shapes whilst option 2 makes more conventional, consistent flat cookies.

Option 1
- Preheat oven to 165 deg C
- Roll the cookie dough into ball shapes with your hands (about a tbsp per cookie)
- Line tray with greaseproof paper and put dough balls on with 5cm between cookies
- Flatten each dough ball down slightly
- Bake for 15-17 mins in oven till browned on bottom and edge. Turn out onto cooling rack

Option 2
- Spoon the mixture onto cling film and roll into a log shape. Wrap the log in cling film and put in the fridge for at least 1/2 hr. [I think also you could freeze it like that too for use another time]
- Preheat the oven to 165 deg C
- Once the cookie dough has cooled enough in the fridge take it out and unwrap the cling film. Cut perpendicularly across the dough making disc shaped cookies about 5mm thick (make it thicker if you like them that way).
- Bake cookies on greaseproof paper tray for 15 mins till browned on the bottom and edges. Turn out onto cooling rack.

Unseasonably Warm September 17, 2009

Phewee! Last night it was so cold that I pulled down the duvet from the cupboard. Woke up this morning sweltering. It was so foggy outside when I woke up I decided against hanging the washing out too early. By 8am it was blistering sunshine and really starting to heat up. It was pretty unbearable in our backyard – aka the Suntrap (it’s a courtyard and it’s like the pavers just absorb all the heat like some sort of pizza oven).

This morning I got the Spring Cleaning bug and decided to give the place a good clean. Blitzed the kitchen thoroughly, hoovered and then mopped all the ground floor (which is tiled). My brother leant me his Kenwood Steam Mop, but sadly it had been so long since he actually used it didn’t even switch on and seemed to have some kind of chemical inside the tank corroding away. Ah well so used my trusty vileda. Must say the tiles themselves are nice and clean (and not greasy in teh kitchen or sticky under Evie’s high chair) but the grout is pretty grim. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bicarb and vinegar and also leaving Oxybleach on it but nothing seems to work. When we moved in we actually thought the grout was orangey/grey coloured but it wasn’t until we installed a dishwasher we realised the grout was originally whitey beige. Floor dried so quickly today I could walk across it within 5 mins and it was bone dry.

It got up to 33 degrees in Sydney today and according to the weatherman on 9 (who is soooo cheesy) it’s 12 deg higher than September average. It’s nuts. So for the first time this year I actually put the air conditioning on around 3pm just to make it comfortable for us in the rumpus (only used it to take the humidity off a bit).

Kogarah Rhymetime September 16, 2009

I dragged Evie and myself to Rhymetime at the library in Kogarah. Contrary to the internet – the library is NOT actually located at 2 Belgrave St, but actually on the other side of the road about 50m up the road, set back in a piazza. It was hard to find a space to park the car and I ended up doing 2 rounds of Kogarah centre before I managed to swoop into a previously occupied space. Hence I was already late then wandering around #2 which had numerous entrances with automatic doors but sadly all shut and looked very closed down. Eventually went to a nearby cafe to ask. Finally found the library and was surprised as the place is massive. They have the rhymetime in the atrium at the entrance and there’s loads of space and big comfy seats for the parents. Even the 2 librarians leading the rhymetime had head-mics so that they could be heard over the vast masses. Although there were loads of kids it didn’t feel cramped and was nice to see the kids all so happy and excited. Evie was a bit scared at first but started to relax more (though saying that she never went further than arm’s length from my chair). Enjoyed it and think will def go back (unlike the horrid time I had at South Hurstville rhymetime a few weeks ago where some of the other mummies were ghastly to me).

Hayfever Woes September 13, 2009

My friend Cat arrived to visit from the UK. Hubby went to pick her up from the airport in the morning. Poor Cat was so knackered after the long flight she went straight to bed. We had a traditional Aussie barbie for lunch at home (i.e. some snags and a rather massive steak) and then chilled in the early afternoon. Hubby took Evie into the pool for the first time this year (they went into our pool for the first time, rather than her first time in a pool ever) but she didn’t like it. Later we headed off to Carss Park for a mooch about, stretch legs and a nice coffee. Since I woke up this morning I’ve been non-stop sneezing and runny nosed. The pollen must be really high today as I went through 2 boxes of tissues and my eyes were so itchy. When we got back from Carss Park it was so bad I had to cancel playing piano at church as I wouldn’t have been able to see (what with all the eye rubbing and sneezing). I think it’s hitting me particularly badly as this is my first Spring in Oz and hubby reckons I’ve not built up any resistance at all to the Aussie pollen.

Evie made a new friend at the Carss Park playground. She climbed up the slide and met a little boy at the top of the slide who she went straight up to a gave a big cuddle. He seemed equally enamoured by her and they went down the slide together and held hands walking round to the steps again. It was so cute. He was only about 2.5 years old. Blond haired little dude who was very grubby (think he must have been rolling about on the playground floor chippings). Evie was shrieking with delight. Meanwhile her Daddy was not looking impressed at Evie’s antics with said boy and he was sulking big time. Poor Evie – Daddy says now no more boyfriends till she’s 25 (she’s had 3 already and she’s only 13 months old).

Home Made Quiche September 11, 2009

Evie our 13 month old is getting very picky with her food lately – in particular brekkie. Firstly she refused to eat Weetbix anymore. Now she’s gone off toast as well (nothing I put on it will get her to nibble). This morning at a loss and having only managed to get a few sultanas down her I decided to see whether she wanted scrambled eggs with ham. She wolfed the whole lot down and used her own fork too. Whilst cutting it up it occured to me that it had turned out similar in consistency to a quiche filling and decided that I was going to try and make my own (for the first time eep). As usual trawled the web for ideas of the ingredients – this is what I ended up doing. I didn’t want to make huge quiches and thought it owuld be useful to make small little ones that I could freeze for Evie to have for dinners. This recipe makes 10 ramekin sized quiches.

Homemade Quiche

Homemade Quiche

Pastry Ingredients:
-300g of plain flour
-150g of butter (melted – I usually soften it by blasting for 15s in microwave)
-1 egg
-1 tbsp of cold water
-Pinch of salt

Filling Ingredients:
-4 rashers of bacon (4 UK sized, or 2 Aussie ones which seem to be about a foot long!!)
-1/2 an onion
-1/2 a leek
-350ml of whole milk
-5 eggs
-1 tbsp of self raising flour
-1 tbsp of chopped basil
-1 tsp of nutmeg
-Couple of shakes of white pepper
-10 tbsp of grated tasty cheese

Instructions:
-Put flour in the bowl and mix the butter and eggs into it. I just mash it up with a fork till it’s like breadcrumbs. Add the salt.
-Add the tbsp of cold water, mix and then start to knead it together. If you find that it’s turning out flaky add some more water.
-With my shortcrust pastry I find it very hard to roll it out to use as invariably it tears of sticks to something so I mould the pastry into the ramekins. Using spray oil I grease the inside of the ramekin. I cut the dough into 10 equal sized chunks and push it into the bottom of the ramekin then just press and mould it with my fingers until it’s more or less evenly spread inside the ramekin. Try to get the pastry at least to the top of the ramekin. Also press and squeeze it quite firmly on the bottom edge to make sure you haven’t got it too thick there.
-Leave the pastry in the ramekins aside and make the filling. You can use whatever you like for the solid parts of the filling but in this case I made a quiche lorraine (bacon, onion and cheese) but added leek as well.
-Dice the onion, bacon and leeks then fry till lightly browned
-Sprinkle the bacon/onion/leek mixture into the bottom of the quiche cases and sprinkle some grated cheese on top of the mixture.
-Whisk the egg and milk together with the self raising flour.
-Add the seasonings to the eggy milk (in my case I put pepper, basil and nutmeg – no need for salt as there’s plenty in the bacon and cheese)
-Pour the eggy mixture into the quiche cases – make sure you leave about 1/2 inch of pastry showing at the top as the filling will rise a little when baked
-Bake in oven for 40 mins at 180 deg or until the pastry edge and top looks browned enough for your likings (don’t be alarmed if they start to rise into mounds – mine started to look like flipping souffles, but after they baked and cooled down they went flat again)
-Once cooked let them cool down in the ramekins. Turn them out only when cool (otherwise you may end up with a very hot gooey eggy mess)

So perfect little quiches for little hungry mouths ;) I reckon they’ll also be great for picnics and the like. It was so simple to make and turned out really good (even I was surprised). The Evie monster taste test agrees and she polished off 1/2 of one as soon as it was cool enough!!

10 Things About My Blood Test Results September 10, 2009

This morning I got my blood test results from last week. Haven’t done a 10 things Thursday for a while so thought this week I’ll make 10 comments about them.

1. I had a whole barrage of tests done – LFT, C, UCr, E pGlu, HDL, TSH, FBC, ESR, ANA, IgA, IgG, IgM, and C3/C4 (according to the print out)
2. Total Cholesterol level is flagged (surprisingly it’s actually a bit low!!)
3. IgG too high (due to the discoid lupus)
4. IgA too high (due to the discoid lupus)
5. Mild eosinophilia (due to my allergies)
6. LDH too high (only marginally and can’t remember the explanation the doctor gave, but nothing to worry about)
7. Apparently the rest of me is “normal” – who would have thought that adjective would ever be used to describe little ole me?
8. The Aussie doctors give you the full lab print out from your blood results (they never did that at my UK GP I always had to remember what they said or write it down myself)
9. So now I also have a referral letter so I can go to the hospital to get put on the waiting list for Dermatology clinic (although here they call it Skin Clinic)
10. I hate blood tests :(
