Last Day of Summer/Winter August 31, 2008

How sad, it’s the last day of August today. Hubby goes back to school tomorrow. I was quite surprised to find that kids in Leicestershire went back to school sometime this week (i.e. in August) – I can’t ever remember term starting so early before. According to my Sydney calendar tomorrow is the first day of Spring – brilliant that means we’re on the way towards Summer again. Not that you could call what we’ve just had in the UK “Summer”. I think there was only one week of Summer this year at that was the last week of July when I was cooped up in the hospital wards giving birth and recovering from my C section.
Summary of the day: Had a lie in (missed church) as Evie had a terrible night’s sleep, Evie bawled ALL day today I think she had terrible wind problems, Hubby cooked a roast dinner (yes, a roast dinner in August), We watched Stardust on DVD whilst playing Scrabble (v hard to concentrate whilst Evie is screaming)
Teachers’ Show and Tell August 30, 2008

It was Show and Tell today! Bit of a twist though as hubby is a teacher and we went to a BBQ at one of the other teacher’s homes (which was an absolutely gorgeous farm house in the middle of the Nottinghamshire countryside). There were 2 show and tells. One of the other science teachers got married over the summer holidays, and of course our little Evie was born at end of July too. Evie was very well behaved and loved all the extra cuddling she got. We of course loved it as we weren’t the ones having to do the constant cuddling for a change!!
Another House Viewing August 29, 2008

We had yet another house viewing today. Not bad, the house has been on the market for 10 days and we’ve had 4 viewings already. Today’s couple were really nice and asked lots of questions. They almost bought another house but got right through to surveying and the mortgage company surveyor valued that house at 15k less and the vendor wouldn’t budge so they are all set to buy. We spent the whole morning tidying again (it’s hard keeping a house in a good state for viewings when you have a dog/whirlwind and a 5 week old baby). I actually polished the woodwork today which was really therapeutic and left it looking shiny and spotless. They seemed to like the house and especially the garden. Again asking about the area – we live on a council estate, but about 50% of the houses are probably privately owned now. A few years back this was one of the worst areas in town, but since we’ve moved in we’ve not had any problems and I think most of the “bad apples” have been moved to the other council estate on the other side of town. We often take baby and doggy for a walk along the streets and find it a pleasant stroll, people actually say hello to each other when they pass in the street! In fact location can be a funny thing as we lived on the village green in a tiny picturesque village (had about 4 shops; the Post Office, a butcher, a florist and a taxi cab company) and in the 6 months we were there hubby’s car got broken into 3 times! Lived in Shelthorpe for 5 years – not one problem at all!
Unfortunately the first 3 viewings were unsuccessful (reasons given : not sure about the area, too far from town and too small – well nothing we can do about these). Hopefully this one may come fruitful (fingers crossed).
Child Medicals August 28, 2008

We went to get Evie’s medical done for her visa to emigrate to Australia. We went to the Tudor House Medical Centre in Nottingham. They were really lovely there and it was really quick, straight in and out and all done. When hubby and I got our medicals done we went to Handsworth Wood in Birmingham and it took almost the entire morning going through their production line (we chose Handsworth for us as they could do the whole lot in one place, X rays, bloods and medicals and also it was cheaper). For Evie, she only had the medical check with the Dr (no X rays needed under 15 and no blood tests needed under 11). The Doctor was really nice and turns out he’s an old boy from the school hubby currently teaches in. They spent more time reminiscing about current and ex teachers than doing the medical itself. The medical for the baby consisted of checking Evie’s passport (laughing at the photo which doesn’t look like her already), weighing, measuring height, head circumference, checking reflexes, hips, and general “form”. It was so funny when he was inspecting her spine alignment – it reminded me a lot of when they inspect the dogs on the table in Crufts!! So all’s fine with her and her medical form should reach Australia House on Tuesday.
Evie’s latest stats were: 8lb 12.5 oz (up from 7lb 10oz 2 weeks ago), 56cm length (she’s grown 6 cm since birth) and 37cm head circumference (up from 35cm 2 weeks ago). It seems so strange that some people’s babies come out bigger than Evie is now at 5 weeks - it must be really painful for them to give birth to something that much bigger.
Child Visa Migration to Australia August 27, 2008

Sat down today and started to fill in the forms for Evie’s visa application. We got our PR visas last November and then found out about Evie’s impending arrival in December, by which time it was way too late to add her to our visa and now we have to apply for a separate child visa for her. Spent most of the morning filling in forms 47CH (child visa) and 40CH (sponsor) – I must say that they don’t seem overly well designed for our circumstance and it was most confusing on some parts. I love the Brit Expats site/forum as you can find answers to all your questions and I think it must have saved us £k’s in migration agent fees as it enabled me to be able to fill in and submit all the forms myself. So, all the forms are done now and her medical is booked for Thursday. We just need to get a few docs certified and then we can send it off – hopefully it’s pretty straight forward and it goes to Australia House in London, rather than off to Adelaide. As long as it’s back before 18th December we’ll be fine as we have booked our flights out already. Bargainous it only cost £85 for Evie, AND she gets a flat bed (well she has a bassinet booked).
Maestro August 26, 2008

I’m loving this TV program called Maestro. Basically they have a number of “celebrities” with some kind of musical ability and teach them how to be conductors. Some have been hilariously bad (Peter Snow, felt like a VW beetle trying to go up a hill with 10 elephants in the boot!!), some have been surprisingly good, and some extremely irritating (there’s something quite annoying about both Katie Derham and Jane Asher). It does remind me of when I used to play in youth orchestras (every Sat morning when I should have been having a lie in I was at school) – wow in fact I think in my 6th form I was in 3 different orchestras at the same time (I must have had no time for any social life)! Anyway, back to Maestro… I really like Sue (who doesn’t seem to need to breathe
), I find Goldie to be be quite jammy, Alex is hilarious (he should use his hair to conduct with more often, ha ha).

I can’t believe it’s been one whole month since Evie was born already. This time last month I had just finished being stitched back together again and we were up on the ward meeting each other for the first time. I’m trying to remember a time before Evie (should that be Annus B.E.?) but I can’t. And I’m trying to remember how I felt, and what I thought when I first saw her little face, but I can’t. It’s like I’ve known her all my life – weird! Although the first month has been hard work, I wouldn’t give it up and I can’t imagine life without her now (oh dear, how schmaltzy have I got in my old age).
Church with a Baby August 24, 2008

I was playing in church again this week (I think they’re making up for the fact I blocked out so many weeks just in case Evie made an early or late appearance). Hubby had to look after baby again. Evie was so well behaved in church this time. It was her 3rd time in church and the previous 2 times she had to go out for a feed/change/general cry and hubby missed the sermon. Today she was good as gold just sitting there, wide awake. Now, we tried to work out what it was and the only 2 things different were that it was Rosie preaching today (rather than Eric) and also there were more hymns interspersed through the talk (Evie likes the signing bits). We forgot to ask about Baptism again – d’oh must remember next week!
First Family Walkies August 23, 2008

We went out for a proper “walkies” this morning. We’d previously been for a quick stroll through the mini nature reserve near our house but this morning the sun was shining and we put all the family in the car and drove up to the Outwoods near Beacon Hill. Evie went into the papoose/baby carrier (which is kind of like a backpack that goes on the front that you hold the baby in) and Mocha was off her lead running back and forth in typical dog style (prob running about 2x the distance we walked). Evie went straight to sleep unless hubby stopped moving when she started to stir. Mocha loved it running all over the place and saying hello to other dogs. She’s so much more mellow and better behaved since the baby came and she didn’t run off, and she did come back when we whistled. we met another dad out with a toddler sitting on his shoulders, a baby in a buggy and a dog. He claimed he was out walking with his family to tire them out, the poor dad looked like he was the only one who was getting tired out!! All in all we ended up ambling about in the woods for a good hour and a half which was great and lovely to get some lovely Leicestershire fresh air. As we walked round we reminisced on when it used to be just hubby and I going on walks, then we added Mocha and now Evie to the outings. We also thought about how this would be one of the last few times we’d walk through the English countryside and that come next summer we’ll be in Australia. Still plenty of walks to do in Oz, but different flora and fauna and a totally different smell/atmosphere.
House Viewings (Part 2) August 22, 2008

We had another couple of house viewings tonight. It’s really hard getting the house to look good, especially with a 4 week old baby. The hardest part is making it tidy, but also hiding away all the baby and dog paraphenalia! The first viewers turned up 30 mins early so we didn’t have time to get rid of the dog and luckily I’d just finished feeding Evie so I wasn’t sat there topless (would have scared them off straight away). Bloody dog was a total pain and decided to make loads of noise, jump in the pond and then jump on their trousers! Hmm they say that you should ship out the dog and kids when having viewers, but as they turned up so early we hadn’t time to get rid of Mocha. I don’t think they were too interested, they are looking in a huge area (anywhere between Loughborough and Lincoln) and I presume that they will prob be able to get more for their money in the countryside/villages. For the second viewers (who incidentally turned up 15 mins late) we put Mocha next door to play with my neighbour and her dog. The viewing went much better, but am not sure whether they are serious buyers yet as they are first timers and just starting out looking at houses. They reminded me of us when we bought this house – fresh out of graduation. It’s a bit stressful trying to sell the house at this time, but at least there do seem to be some viewers. We have another set of viewers coming next weekend and will hopefully get some feedback from these viewers next week. The viewers yesterday loved the house but weren’t sure about the area (it’s hard because it is a council estate and that does have a stigma against it, but u can’t buy a house for the same budget elsewhere in other areas town).
